Ingrown toenails

What is it?

Nail surgery is a straightforward procedure which involves removing the symptomatic portion of a nail and ensuring that it does not grow back. Depending on your presenting complaint, the Podiatrist may decide to remove the entire nail or a segment.

Causes:

  • Ingrowing toenail: Poor nail cutting may result in a sharp edge or a ‘spike’ pressing against the sulcus. As the nail grows, the spike progresses to pierce the skin resulting in severe pain, inflammation and in many cases, infection

  • Involuted toenail: Some individuals naturally have rounder nails. In some cases, the nail presses against the sulcus resulting in an element of discomfort or pain

  • Repetitive or blunt trauma may result in a nail growing deformed and thickened. As they can become difficult to manage and/or aesthetically displeasing, some people would just rather have the nail permanently removed

What can I do for you?

  • Nail surgery under local anaesthesia (total or partial nail avulsion)*

  • Nail resection (does not involve anaesthetic or matrixectomy)

  • Foot care advice

Please note: *This is clinical procedure and therefore is not offered as a home visiting service.
